Adult and juvenile provincial championships draw to a close

Peter Dennehy

Another busy weekend beckons in the 40x20 handball courts as the adult and juvenile provincial championship draws to a close, the coming weeks fixtures feature Mens Senior Singles Final on Sunday in Cappagh at 3.00pm, while in Juvenile both boys and Girls Finals are down for decision on Saturday in Tralee and Ballymacelligott both venues commence at 10.30am.

The Mens Senior Singles Final in Cappagh on Sunday is an all Cork affair as Mallow's Killian Carroll takes on Ballydesmond's Brendan Fleming with the prize for the winner being crowned Munster Senior Singles champion together with a place in the quarter-finals of the All Ireland Senior Singles Championship.

It has been a good year so far for Cork players in Mens Senior Championship with Killian and Brendan teaming up two weeks ago to win the double title and now one of them will be Singles champion on Sunday evening. They met in the County Senior Singles Final in December with Brendan coming out on top on that occasion, Killian will no doubt be going all out to prove that form all wrong, it should be a good final with possibly only a few aces separating them at the end.

In other adult championship action this evening at the Cappagh venue at 7.30 Munster Silver Masters B Doubles title will be decided with Danny Lenihan,Boherbue teaming up with Ballydesmond's Paul Kerins to face Limerick Denis McCarthy/Denis Ahern, if the Cork pair can repeat the form shown on their way to the final, then they would be in with a great chance of taking the title.

Cork are also involved in Ladies Senior Singles Final in which Ballydesmonds Catriona Casey plays Kerry's Maria Daly, that game is fixed for Ballymacelligott time and date has to be set.

On the juvenile front Saturday will be a busy day for many players with both Girls and Boys Finals down for decision at Tralee and Ballymacelligott.

The Mallow Credit Union sponsored Cork players will contest eleven finals six in boys and five in Girls.

In Girls at Ballymacelligott Cork players will be in three finals, U12 Singles Niamh O'Regan, Conna v Clare, U14 Singles Laura Hayes, Conna v Clare, U14 Doubles, Aoife Hurley, Conna/Ellen Murphy, Kilworth v Clare.

At Tralee Cork boys and girls are involved in eight final, starting with Girls U13 Doubles, Sarah Kelly,Ballydesmond/Linda O'Donnell, Kilworth v Clare, Girls U15 Singles, Anna Dunne, Kilworth v Tipperary.

In Boys U13 Singles Cian O Driscoll,Mallow v Tipperary or Clare. Boys U13 Doubles; Sean Murphy,Ballydesmond/Michael O'Callaghan, Liscarroll v Tipperary. Boys U14 Doubles: Conor Walsh/Michael O Malley, Mallow v Tipperary. Boys U15 Doubles: David Walsh/Tadgh O Neill, Mallow. Boys U16 Singles; Oisin Hickey, Kilworth v Tipperary. Boys U16 Doubles; Kevin O'Connell, Ballydesmond/David O'Connor, Boherbue v Tipperary.

It's not going to be easy in any age group as there is strong opposition with in particular Tipperary in boys and Clare in girls having some very good players. It will be experience and a learning curve for all the young players involved.
