Up to 140 places open on local Tús schemes

The Avondhu Blackwater Partnership has revealed it currently has up to 140 Tús placements available across its wider coverage area.

The news comes just days after the introduction of new regulations widening the eligibility requirements for people wishing to self-refer for the Community Employment Scheme.

From the start of this month the total number of self-referrals increased from 20% to 30%, allowing for an increase in the number of people who can refer themselves on to the Tús initiative.

Sponsored by the Department of Employment and Social Protection (DEASP), the Tús initiative provides short-term work opportunities for unemployed people who have been in receipt of a jobseekers allowance payment for a minimum of 12-months.

Another change to the scheme means that those who have had a break of up to, but not exceeding, 30-days during their claim period will now become eligible to join a Tús scheme.

A Partnership spokesperson said they are inviting people to contact them to discuss the workings of the initiative.

"Tús aims to break the cycle of unemployment and to prepare each person for a return to the labour market. Being employed gives people a sense of purpose and provides a structure to life," said the spokesperson.

Applicants accepted onto the scheme will work 19.5 hours per week during their 12-month placement. They will receive the same statutory (pro rata) annual lave and public holiday entitlements as other employees, in addition to a weekly top-up of €22.50 to their existing payments.

"We here at Avondhu Blackwater Partnership currently have up to 140 placements in the greater Fermoy, Mallow and Blarney areas," said the spokesperson.

"Any person looking to find out more details about the Tús programme and to check their eligibility can contact our offices on 022 46580 or email our Tús supervisor Vincent O'Flynn at"
