Two men lose their lives in apartment fire
TRAGEDY struck Mallow in the early hours of last Thursday morning when two men lost their lives in a fire at an apartment in the Granary Court Complex on St Joseph's Road.
The emergency services were alerted to the incident at around midnight when local gardai and three units of the fire service from Mallow and Kanturk rushed to the scene of the blaze.
When gardai arrived the flat was well ablaze with flames and smoke billowing from its windows.
With little regard for their own safety two Mallow based gardai, Liam Philips and Cathriona O'Sullivan plunged into the burning building, battling smoke and flames to rescue two people, local woman Rachel Crawshaw (27) and Dublin native Chris Palmer (37).
However, gardai were foiled in their attempts to re-enter the building due to excessive smoke. Fire-fighters using breathing apparatus entered the building shortly afterwards and discovered the bodies of Greg Lonergan (36) from Mallow and Mr Palmer's twin brother John. Their remains were taken to the morgue at the Cork University where post mortems were carried out. At the time of going to press the results of the post mortems had not been released.
Funeral arrangements for the two deceased men have also yet to be announced.
Ms Crawshaw and Chris Palmer were taken to the CUH and treated for injuries including smoke inhalation.
Investigating gardai remained at the scene well into Friday sifting through the debris in the search for clues as to how the fire may have started.
Investigating gardai have appealed to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Granary Court between 8pm on Thursday, March 13 and midnight to contact Mallow gardai on 022 21105.
