Try a dive and take on a new challenge with Blackwater SAC

The Fermoy based Blackwater Sub Aqua Club has issued an open invitation to anybody who wants to take on a new challenge for the New Year by joining their ranks.

The club will host a 'try a dive' event on Wednesday, February 7, offering people the chance to find out more about the club and experience the thrill of diving, with the possibility of qualifying as a diver within a few weeks. Club secretary Kenneth Barry said joining would open up a whole new world of experiences.

"This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who may have considered taking up scuba diving, but don't know where to start," said Mr Barry.

"Members get the opportunity to enjoy sea and river life, explore wrecks and take scenic dives in Cork Harbour and farther afield," he added.

Under the 'try a dive' initiative, club officials will host an open information and briefing session at their clubhouse on the Rathealy Road from 7pm during which they will give details of the training course.

Following that, participants will relocate to the local swimming pool where they will get the chance to experience a scuba dive under tightly controlled conditions.  This will be followed by a series of lectures in the clubhouse, snorkel practice and scuba diving practice in the pool and a morning of snorkelling at sea.  Over the Easter bank holiday weekend trainees will take part in final qualifying scuba dives at sea before gaining certification as CMAS one-star divers.  The course is open to beginners and crossover divers from PADI, BSAC, SSI and CMAS over the age of 16.  Each applicant must pass a basic swimming test, visit the club's GP and complete a fitness test to dive requirement prior to commencing the course.  The cost of training will be €450, which includes a full year membership of the Sub Aqua Club.
