Stephanie makes final at European Championships
West Muskerry Round-up
Stephanie Cotter was selected for the Irish U23 Team that competed in the European U23 Track and Field Championships which ran from Thursday to Sunday last week in Sweden.
Stephanie was selected for the 1,500m and all at West Muskerry AC were so delighted for her to be able to compete with the best in Europe. She competed in the second heat on Friday and all the club jumped for joy when she qualified for the final.
On Sunday she took to the track again and in what was a very tactical race Stephanie challenged all the way. With 300m to go there was a massive surge in pace and all sprinted for home. While Stephanie was out of the medals on this occasion, she has gained valuable experience but more so she knows now that she is good enough to compete with the best in the World. All West Muskerry AC are very proud of her.
Elsewhere for West Muskerry AC, Saorlaith Murphy competed in the Munster B Girls U13 Long Jump and Shot Putt and achieved two new personal bests. In the long Jump she finally jumped four metres, a target she has been trying to hit all year. The icing on the cake came for Saorlaith in the Shot Putt when she threw seven meters and 94 centimetres and was awarded the silver medal. She now competes in the All Ireland B in Tullamore this Sunday and we wish her well.
There was fantastic success too for West Muskerry AC Para athletes Cathal Ryan and Stephen Bradley who were in superb form at the National Para Championships in Santry on Saturday last, July 13. Both have only just finished their Leaving Certificate.
Stephen won gold in the 800m, Silver in the Javelin and Silver in the Discus and also achieved a National Championships Games record in the Discus. Cathal competed in the Discus, 200m and the 100m.
He won gold in all three events and achieved a personal best time in the 100m. Great results from both athletes.
Cathal competed in the John Buckley Graded League 200m on Monday, July 15, and achieved a massive personal best time of 25.24.
This sets him up nicely for when he competes on the Irish Team in the World Para Track and Field in Switzerland in August.
