THIS dramatic photograph (below) taken by Gougane Barra hotelier Neil Lucey, shows R115 shining its Night Sun light to guide Kerry Mountain Rescue members and locals to two young walkers who were stranded on exposed rough ground overlooking the beauty spot at the weekend.

According to R115’s account of the rescue on its Facebook page, they were able to pinpoint the location of the trapped walkers with the ultra bright light.

“With the assistance of local people Rescue 115 was able to pinpoint the location of the pair and then illuminate the area with our powerful ‘night-sun’ searchlight.

“This helped guide Kerry Mountain Rescue team and local rescuers to the location, from where the pair were brought to safety.

“Our infra-red camera also gave us a very clear view of the area and enabled us to talk the ground rescuers in to the precise casualty location.

“This tasking highlighted the importance of a multi-agency response, all working closely together to accomplish the goal, and also the value of local knowledge and the willingness of local people to come to the assistance of those in need.”

The R115 crew also thanked Neil Lucey, owner and manager of the family run Gougane Barra Hotel, for taking the dramatic photo depicting them at their work.

“Thanks to Neil Lucey of the Gougane Barra Hotel for the photo - Neil has been a great supporter of Mountain Rescue for many years.”

The rescue took place as night fell on Sunday.
