'Oscar' for Macroom anti-smoking film
IT was a case of 'roll out the red carpet' last week when a Macroom group won the 'best Oscar' at a national film festival aimed at steering young people away from tobacco.
For their part, the group from Macroom Youthreach produced a short film, entitled 'Nicotine Nation', showing how prevalent smoking is in this country.
Their film, along with 46 others from across the country, was shown last week in the Dublin Lighthouse Cinema as part of the X-HALE Youth Awards.
The X-HALE Youth Awards is a smoking prevention project of the Irish Cancer Society which aims to help de-normalise smoking and get the message across that not all young people smoke. When the film fest was complete and the 'Oscars' announced, the Macroom group landed two prizes - one, the online prize for the video, plus the Oscar for the best overall.
