Mullane steps up for vacant seat
SINN FEIN'S Melissa Mullane this week became Mallow Town Council's 'new kid on the block' after being co-opted into the seat vacated following the retirement of former mayor Willie O'Regan.
She is a very well-known face within local political circles, Cllr Mullane has been a member of the Sinn Fein party for more than a decade, at one stage serving as chair of its Mallow branch.
The 41-year-old was recently selected by the party to contest next year's local elections in the Mallow/Kanturk area.
"I am delighted to have this opportunity to represent Sinn Fein on the town council and intend to work hard to address the many issues of concern raised during a canvass of the area over the summer months," said Cllr Mullane.
Cllr Mullane said the planned abolition of the town council was a major concern to the people of Mallow.
"As town councillors we need to be vigilant to ensure this does not impact negatively on the people of Mallow in relation to issues such as the harmonisation of commercial rates, housing supply and the upkeep of roads and footpaths," said Cllr Mullane.
