Mallow's James 300/1 for Open win
Having barely had time to draw breath after his dramatic British Amateur Championship victory, Mallow golfing sensation James Sugrue is busy preparing for his next big challenge.
This after the 22-year-old, who became just the eighth Irishman to win the competition in its illustrious 124-year history, was named in the six-strong Irish team that will contest the European Amateur Team Championships.
They will run from next Tuesday to the following Saturday at the Ljunghusen Golf Club located on Sweden's southern tip, above the Baltic Sea.
Following his dramatic Amateur Championship win on the final hole of a gruelling 36-hole final against Scottish golfer Euan Walker, James has also won exemptions to this month's British Open at Royal Portrush and next year's US Masters at Augusta National and the US Open at Winged Foot.
The victory has temporarily postponed any thoughts of James turning professional as the exemptions come with the proviso that he remain an amateur.
It also earned him a berth on the Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Team against the US at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club (Hoylake) in September.
While it has been 89 years since an amateur has won the British Open, Boyle Sports has offered inviting odds of 300/1 on James breaking that long streak.
They are also offering odds of 33/1 on James to finish in the top ten and 66/1 for a top five finish.
