Heroin addict caught on CCTV camera snatching a handbag

A CCTV camera snapped a heroin addict with 127 convictions taking a handbag at a restaurant in Mallow.

At Mallow District court, Inspector Eddie Golden said CCTV footage was obtained which showed Deirdre O'Sullivan entering Uncle Brando's restaurant, Market Square in Mallow on September 17, 2013.

He said the handbag was later recovered. However, perfume and €170 were missing.

Deirdre O'Sullivan (30) of 21 Bride Valley View, Fairhill, Cork pleaded guilty to the single charge of theft.

Solicitor Dave Waters said his client was currently in custody and she wouldn't be released from prison until July 19, 2014. He said when she was interviewed she made a full admission.

He said at the time of the offence, she was a heroin addict.

However, she is now engaging in a methadone programme in prison.

He said all her offences stemmed from when she was "getting money for heroin."

Judge Sheridan said that at least now, Ms O'Sullivan is attempting to address her heroin addiction problem.

He issued an eight month custodial sentence with six months suspended for two years.

"She is now facing six months in prison if she doesn't stay on the path that she is now on," he warned.
