Gardai in hunt for armed man after Ballincollig assault

Bill Browne

Gardai have launched an investigation following an attempted armed robbery and assault outside a Ballincollig casino and gaming venue during the early hours of last Thursday morning.

The incident occurred just before 1am at the rear of the premises, which is situated on a pedestrian street linking Main Street to Bothar Saclay close to the local cinema on Time Square.

A female worker at the casino was at the rear of the building when she was approached by a masked man brandishing what was believed to be a firearm.

The man threatened and assaulted the woman before fleeing from the scene empty handed on foot. While no shots were fired the worker did receive minor injuries that did not require medical attention. However, a Garda spokesman she was understandably badly shaken by the incident.

The assailant was described as being between 5ft 6 inches and 5ft 9inches tall and wearing blue jeans, a black jacket and black shoes.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have been on or in the vicinity of Main Street Ballincollig between midnight and 1.30am and may have noticed any suspicious activity to contact us," said the Garda spokesman.

Gardai have also asked that anyone who was driving through Ballincollig around the time of the incident and may have dam cam footage that could assist their ongoing investigation to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on 021 4946200, the Garda confidential line on 1800-66-111 or any Garda station.
