Fiona posts 13th set of festive cards for cancer research
Renowned textile artist Fiona Turley launched her bespoke 2017 Christmas cards on Sunday last at her Gallery Crafts outlet in Kilworth.
For over 13 years Fiona has created and donated the festive designs to Cork based charity Breakthrough Cancer Research (BCR), raising funds for their ground breaking research into poor prognosis cancers.
This year Fiona hopes to raise even more money for cancer research and Sunday last saw, not only the launch of her 2017 cards, but also helped kick off the festive season. The open invitation saw visitors treated to a mulled wine and mince pies reception as they got an eyeful of what's on offer at the gallery for the Christmas shopping spree
Elizabeth Cooke, the new owner of the café 'Cooke's at the Gallery' made the delicious mini mince pies for the occasion while the café was also open.
Fiona said the success of the cards reflects the generosity of those who support Breakthrough Cancer Research, the hard work of those selling the cards and the companies who opt to use them for their Christmas messages.
"Christmas is a time of goodwill and what better to wish your family, friends and colleagues a 'happy Christmas' than by sending a card with a personal message while also supporting a great cause," said Fiona.
"I am as always honoured and grateful to Orla and all at Breakthrough Cancer Research for continuing to include me in their fundraising efforts. I would like to give a voice to all those who have journeyed with cancer and wish all the doctors and researchers the inspiration to find a cure for this disease that affects so many." Each pack of cards contains a selection of 10 cards, each with a unique design, at a cost of €10. 100% of the proceeds go to BCR.
BCR is leading the way with research into cancers with poor prognosis such as ovarian, pancreatic and oesophageal, having already progressed seven treatments from the laboratory to clinical trial. They work closely with multiple hospitals in Cork to ensure their research is responding to the needs of patients with cancers that do not respond to conventional therapies.
Orla Dolan, Fundraising Director for BCR said they are lucky to have this partnership with Fiona.
"Every year we are as excited as ever to see the stunning new designs Fiona creates for the festive season," said Orla. "Cancer touches us all and your support helps us bring life-changing treatments from the laboratory to patients."
