The 20-year old driver of a car that crashed off the road, resulting in the death of her teenage friend, had been driving for just eight months and was not accompanied by a fully licenced driver at the time of the crash.

The Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee also heard this week that Caitlin Taylor (14) who died at the scene, had taken off her seat belt when she dropped her mobile phone in the front car well, and had not re-fastened it, when the car plunged off the road.

Sarah O'Connell, of Sean Moylan Park, Mallow, denies a charge of careless driving causing the death of Ms Taylor on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Knockeenahone, Scartaglen.

Caitlin Taylor of Gouldshill, Mallow, who would have been 15 on June 24, had asked her friend Sarah O'Connell, then aged 20, to driver her to Scartaglen.

They left Mallow around 9.30pm and were just 5 kms from Scartaglen when the grey Yaris failed to take a bend, plunged two metres into a low lying field and tumbled a number of times. Caitlin was ejected from the car as it crashed and died instantly.
