Driver has lucky escape after freak incident

Bill Browne

A shocked driver had a lucky escape after the wheel of a trailer smashed through his windscreen with such force that it broke the front passenger seat of his car.

The incident took place at around 6pm last Friday as the car was travelling along the N73 Mitchelstown to Mallow road at Waterdyke, Kildorrery.

A Garda spokesperson told The Corkman that a wheel that had come off of a trailer being pulled by a Ford Transit pickup travelling in the direction of Mallow and smashed straight through the windscreen of the car, breaking the passenger seat in half.

"Had there been someone in the seat they would have been seriously injured or even killed. To say this was a lucky escape would be something of an understatement," said the spokesperson.

"The design of the trailer was such that it could be towed with a wheel missing, so the driver of the Transit may not have even realised the wheel had come off at the time and only noticed it was missing when he got home."

The spokesperson said that the road would have been busy at the time with other traffic and appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Fermoy Garda station on 025 82100.
