Crowds trot along to enjoy summer fair at the Donkey Sanctuary

Sheila Fitzgerald

'Our vision is a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued,' is the ethos of the Donkey Sanctuary in Liscarroll and, judging by the massive turnout at the Summer Fair last Sunday, concern for animal welfare is widely supported by kind people all around Ireland.

The weather obliged for the occasion with bright sunshine throughout the day. All the donkeys were out in the fields and children and families had the opportunity to meet and groom some very placid donkeys under the watchful eye of sanctuary staff and volunteers.

In addition, there was lots of family fun including the Dog Show, bouncy castles and games like 'hook a duck' and 'sweet wheel of fortune'.

With interesting stalls of crafts and foodstuffs to browse, visitors from around North Cork and further afield enjoyed a great day out strolling around the sanctuary.

The main focus of the day was the Fun Dog Show. With ten different categories, including Best Cross Breed, Cutest Puppy and the Best Waggy Tail, the dog show was a hive of activity with many beautiful dogs both big and small.

Dr. Joe Collins, Chief Veterinary Advisor at the sanctuary presided over the dog show with the help of Fundraising Manager, Ireland, Breeda Clancy. Family events like this take place at various times during the year at The Donkey Sanctuary. The next big day is the Teddy Bears Picnic on Thursday 4th July.

"We love holding fundraising events like the Summer Fair and Teddy Bears Picnic," declared Breeda Clancy. "We are delighted to see so many families here today, enjoying themselves and supporting the sanctuary.  The day has been a great success and we look forward to our next event," Breeda added.
