Professor Emeritus John A Murphy will open an 'Art For Older People' exhibition in the Ionad Cultúrtha on May Day.

The Art For Older People exhibition is part of the Tacaois 2014 scheme and runs from May 1 to 26.

This scheme, organised by Ionad Cultúrtha and with funding from Ealaín na Gaeltachta, runs art classes in three day centres in the Muskerry Gaeltacht – Baile Mhúirne Day Centre, Cois Cille Day Centre in Kilnamartyra and Cuan Barra Day Centre in Ballingeary.

The Tacaois Art classes facilitate two groups of older people, whose ages range from 65 to 85. There are up to 20 older people who have been attending these classes for the past 4 to 5 years.

"The aim of the classes is to access tuition in sketching, painting and pastels, using acrylics, watercolors and oils, along with pastels and charcoal," said their teacher, and artist, Pauline Dodds. "The subject matter varies from landscape and still life to portraiture, flower painting and pastoral scenes.

"Each May we exhibit the year's work in a rich and varied exhibition where the participants' individual expression and creativity is displayed and appreciated by friends, relatives, local school children and visitors to the Ionad Cultúrtha.

"The classes are very precious to us and we view them as a learning and creative experience, as well as being a happy, social, weekly occasion, where we have an opportunity to exchange experiences, share each other's stories - both sad and happy – and chat about family and everything that is important to us."

Pauline said they also discuss current affairs and get all the local gossip while making new friends in the process! "Therefore, these Art classes are an ongoing learning and rewarding experience for us all," she added. "Most of us have taken up painting only in the past few years and had no previous experience whatsoever! The development of painting and sketching skills is astonishing and a source of great joy and satisfaction to us all."
