€500k Lotto luck in North Cork again

Lucky Kanturk punter scoops a cool €500k

North Cork's Lotto winning streak continued with yet another lucky local punter set to pocket a cool €500,000 after scooping the top prize in last Friday night's Euromillions Plus draw.

The winning ticket was purchased at Towhig's SuperValu in Kanturk within days of a nine-strong syndicate from the Barry Group picking up a €500,000 cheque at Lotto HQ in Dublin after their numbers came up in the June 11 Euromillions draw.

Amazingly, this was the second time a syndicate from the Mallow based company had won big Lotto bucks, after a group of 20 colleagues shared an almost €370,000 windfall back in 2017.

A member of the latest Barry Group winning syndicate said their colleagues win two years ago inspired them to set up their own syndicate.

"There certainly wasn't any jealousy at work but it kicked us into action to set up our own syndicate. It's just unbelievable that there could be two wins at the same workplace in such a short space of time. Everybody back at Barry's is absolutely buzzing for us all."

Last Friday night's win was the third in the Rebel County in the past two weeks, after another €500,000 winning ticket was sold at the kiosk in Merchant's Quay on Friday, June 15.

Last Friday night's winning numbers were 3, 21, 34, 42 & 50.

A spokesperson from National Lottery confirmed to The Corkman on Tuesday that the lucky holder of the winning ticket had made contact with them and their ticket had been verified.

While the identity of the winner(s) still remains a mystery, Kevin Forde, the manager of the SuperValu store in Kanturk, said the rumour mill had been "working overtime" since news broke that they had sold the winning ticket.

"People have been coming in to check their own tickets and to see who might have won. So, far the ticket holder has managed to keep it quiet, so we have no idea who it might be," said Kevin.  He said the win had generated a great buzz around the town.

"For us, it's great that one of our customers is half-a-million Euro richer. We all hope it is one of our regular customers, that they enjoy their money and it brings them all the very best of luck," he added.
