This eagerly awaited local clash against Milford is scheduled for this Friday night in Charleville at 7.00pm.

Unfortunately, Meelin have been inactive for almost 2 months since our round 1 victory over Dripsey. Such a lengthy layoff without action is undoubtedly a major hindrance to our chances of advancing, especially when Milford have had the benefit of much more recent clashes.

This is sure to be a titanic battle, when you consider the history carried by the Milford hurling club. County league & championship champions at Junior level in 1981 was followed immediately by the identical double at Intermediate level the following year of 1982.

Very few teams had made such a leap, jumping 2 grades of championship in just 2 seasons, but such was the talent available to Milford in those famous years of the 1980's. Milford proved their worthiness at senior level, though success was hard to come by. They did win the senior hurling league in 1991, but had a heartbreaking loss in a senior county championship semi final also.

It is 30 years this year since Milford first played outside the Avondhu Junior ranks, and though it is now a while since they have played at senior level, their reputation over the years is of a team and club that is hugely experienced for the big occasion and are known to never go down without a fight.

This year has seen Milford garner a good victory over Blackrock in round 1, as well as playing recent league games. Though success has been hard to come by in the league, they have had a number of 1 & 2 point losses, which shows how close they have been.

History shows that each year in recent times, Milford have never been far away and are a team to always be feared. A club that has had several players wear the red & white of Cork Hurling with distinction over the decades, Milford has had a number of past All Ireland Senior Hurling medal winners. Pat Buckley, recent Cork Senior Hurling selector, who is now heavily involved at juvenile club level at Charleville and Sean O Gorman, who works tirelessly year after year for the senior and juvenile clubs at Milford, both won senior All Ireland medals in 1990, with O Gorman a double All Star winner.

Indeed, Eoin Dillon has up to earlier this year been a stalwart in the back line of the current Cork defence. Eoin has recently been travelling abroad, but it is expected he will make his return to the Milford colours on Friday night, which is a certain boost for Milford.

So, though this clash is almost impossible to call at this stage, we hope that Meelin will be able to pull through and enter the Cork Intermediate quarterfinal stage for the first time. Maoileann Abu.
