Stepping out for the source of the Blackwater on St Stephen's Day

Sheila Fitzgerald

With Christmas Day done and dusted, a large group of energetic people took the opportunity to work off the excesses of the turkey and spuds by taking part in a 7km-walk organised by Sliabh Luachra Macra on St Stephen's morning.

Chairperson Claire McAuliffe said that the mild dry weather was a great incentive for people to join in the walk.

"It was fantastic to see such a large turn out, one of the biggest crowds we've had to date," she said.

The walkers met up at the Old School House in Foyle, Ballydesmond. The actual trek began at the entrance to the Cordal Windfarm and continued on to the source of the Blackwater River.

On returning to Foyle, everyone was ready for the tea and sandwiches, kindly sponsored by Howard's Foodstore.

Macra groups from Awbeg, Banteer and Freemount turned up to support the Sliabh Luachra group, and on the day, €1,046 was raised.

"When all the money is in we hope to have approximately €2,000 for Marymount Hospice," Ms McAuliffe said.

The Sliabh Luachra Macra group welcomes new members and can be contacted through their Facebook page.
