Newmarket in historic win over city club
On Sunday last our Premier Intermediate footballers travelled to Mallow GAA complex to face city rivals Na Piarsaigh in the opening round of this year's county championship.
It was the first meeting between both sides in a adult football championship since November 16 1965 when Newmarket lost out by a point at Macroom in the quarter final of the junior football championship.
And once again Na Piarsaigh proved themselves formidable rivals before Newmarket emerged victorious after extra-time on a 1-21 0-17 score-line.
Line-out was as follows: Josh O'Keeffe, Donacha Fitzpatrick, Aidan Browne, Paudie Allen, Patrick Browne, Alan Ryan, Bart Caly (captain), Kevin O'Sullivan, TJ Brosnan, Tony O'Keeffe, Daniel Cullotty, Donal Hannon, Ryan O'Keeffe, Conor O'Keeffe, TJ Bodie.
Subs were Mike Cottrell, Barry O'Connor, Cathal Browne, Darren O'Keeffe, and Gavin Forde.
Newmarket have now qualified for third round.
It was the fourth occasion that Newmarket have won an adult championship football game at Mallow.
Previous successes came in 1969, 2003 & 2004.
On Sunday at 4pm, a huge crowd is expected at Newmarket GAA grounds for the first round county intermediate football championship tie between Knocknagre and Rockchapel.
And on this Friday night last year's under-21 A Duhallow hurling final featuring Robert Emmetts (Newmarket, Lismire and Dromtarriffe) will take place at Kanturk at 6.30pm.
