Council seeking musical donations

Bill Browne

As any parent of an aspiring musician will tell you, buying instruments can be quite a costly business. It is even more frustrating to see expensive instruments and musical equipment lying idle and gathering dust in attics after people realise that leaning to play the guitar is not for them.

With this in mind Cork County Council is looking at introducing a pilot scheme where unwanted instruments can be donated to their library section and then loaned out to the public.

"This would allow people to road test their musical skills before investing in a costly piece of equipment themselves," said a council spokesperson.

"To get this pilot off the ground we are seeking donations of portable instruments no longer in use by their owners and in good condition."

Any one who may be interested in donating instruments can contact the cork County Library and Arts Service on 021 454 6499 or email

However, do note: for health and safety reasons the council is unable to accept any wind instruments.
