Community news: Millstreet Matters

The Millstreet Adult Learning Centre hosts an open day today from 10.30am to 1.30pm in the Adult Learning Centre, Main Street.

That marks a reopening after the summer break. Classes for the coming term, September to December, focus on digital media (developing skills in social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and more); personal decision making; driver theory; computer courses (beginners to advanced classes); English language (speaking and writing); arts and crafts; and singing.

There will also be general learning, with one-to-one and small-group tuition available for adults who would like to build confidence with reading, writing, spelling and maths skills needed for work and everyday life.

The Adult Learning Centre, Main Street, is situated two doors up from Aisling gift shop. Tutors will be on site to take registrations and give details about course contents and starting dates and times. Interested patrons who are unable to attend for registration but would like to attend classes, please contact Marie on (086) 770 7301 on Mondays and Thursdays only.

Miss Dublin, Maria, training for Dublin Mini Marathon

Current Miss Dublin Maria Murphy, from Ballydaly, is raising awareness for the Irish Cancer Society and is committed to running the Dublin Mini Marathon on Sunday, September 23.

After graduating from UCC last year, Maria joined Sigmar recruitment in Dublin and currently specialises in fund service and asset management.

Thrilled to be selected as Miss Dublin and to secure a place in the 2018 Miss Ireland in the Helix Theatre on Sunday week, Maria is also gearing up for the mini marathon.

"Its such an amazing platform (Miss Ireland) and even being a finalist allows me to be a greater advocate for charities special to me. I am currently training for the Dublin Mini Marathon, hopefully raising necessary funds for Irish Cancer research and development", said Maria.

The former Millstreet athlete seeks out support for her fundraising venture, and the public can follow her progress for the Dublin Mini Marathon and contribute to the fund raiser on her Instagram (mariaa_murphy), Facebook, or by donating directly to the Irish Cancer Society.
