Boxing is coming

There is only 1 week left to go!! Friday of next week sees the eagerly awaited boxing battle between Newmarket & Meelin GAA players & celebrities, as well as 6 local ladies, at Safaris Nite Club in Newmarket on Friday February 22nd. There are still a few remaining tickets, & there will be some on sale at the door on the night, at €20 each. All the boxers have been sponsored & a huge thanks is due to those who have come up with the sponsorship. You can follow the event by logging on to Meelin GAA Facebook page, where we will keep updated information on the event. There are some great pictures of what's been happening during training, as well as a few punches thrown & landed!!

8TH FEBRUARY 2013: Evelyn Curtin, Meelin €45; Noel Doherty, Meelin €50; Eamonn & Niamh Brosnan, Meelin €55

Its all of 2 years from yesterday, February 13th, since we walked the hallowed Croke Park ground & came home as All Ireland Junior Hurling Champions. The memories must have flooded back as people tuned into the games last Sunday weekend, where Thomastown of Kilkenny just barely overcame Fullen Gaels of Manchester 2.17 to 2.14. That's the same Fullen Games that we took the most memorable trek to play at Bermingham in January 2011!! We look forward to another great hurling year for Meelin, which commences next month.

''The Gathering Ireland 2013'' takes place this year. This is an initiative that aims to encourage Irish people living in other countries around the world to visit Ireland in 2013. Meelin Carnival Committee plans to incorporate specific events into Meelin Carnival 2013 to encourage people who have a connection with Meelin to return home to join in the carnival activities. We are asking all members of Meelin community to ask their family and friends who are living abroad if they would have an interest in coming home for the Carnival in the year of The Gathering. The carnival will this year be held during the weekend of 23rd – 25th August. Please contact Conor Lehane on 087-6316619 or Eileen Kelly on 086-8044500 with any feedback. We ask that you encourage anyone who is interested in coming to Ireland this year to do so in August & come to Meelin.

Indoor hurling training continues at Meelin Gym on Monday nights for 1st to 6th class, whilst fitness training takes place on Tuesdays for the other age groups at Meelin Hall.

All families of players have been handed out the Annual GAA Registration Forms. We are asking that these be returned as soon as possible so all players can be immediately registered for insurance reasons for 2013.

The first games of the year are due to be held this coming weekend. Our St Peters U14 footballers are due to play Millstreet this Sunday at Rockchapel at 11am, which will be followed by the Rockchapel footballers playing Kildorrery in their first league game at Kildorrery in the afternoon. These games are of course weather dependent.

An open evening for all Groups, Clubs & Organisations will take place in Meelin Community Centre on Sunday afternoon, February 24th from 3.00 – 5.00pm. It is hoped that all groups, clubs & organisations, which represent the people of Meelin in any way will present their group & display their activities.

People who might be interested in meeting the organisers of those groups, clubs or organisations, in joining or finding out more information are welcome to come along or just to have a cuppa with neighbours and friends.
