The Awbeg Macra Group blazed a trail to the top as winners of the FBD Insurance Capers National Final at Mallow Youth Centre on Saturday night with members from Buttevant, Churchtown, Liscarroll, Doneraile and Kilavullen all contributing to the winning formula.

The Freemount Group came a close second in a contest which saw six teams of young people from various groups all around the country take part.

"Tonight is the culmination of months of hard work by all of these clubs and even getting to tonight's final is an achievement in itself given the tough competition at the previous rounds," said Macra national president James Healy.

"The Capers competition develops a range of skills in our members from singing and comedy to dedication and the ability to work as part of a team" he added.  Mr Healy paid tribute to Avondhu Macra who hosted the final this year and thanked the judges, FBD Insurance Group and sponsors for their continued support.

Chairperson Marie Murphy who spoke on behalf of Avondhu Macra thanked everybody involved and said that the event would showcase a fantastic array of songs, laughter and entertainment.

Marie added her good wishes to the various contestants who came  from Bree (Wexford), Clonakilty, Devil's Bit (North Tipperary), Kilnaleck (Cavan), Awbeg  and Freemount.
