Around the districts: Banteer, Kilbrin, Kilshannig

Banteer: Under-12s win their first silverware. A Great day was had by the under-12 Football team from Lyre on Saturday last as they claimed their first silverware after an epic battle against Milford in Churchtown on a shoreline of Lyre 7: six (27) to Milford 4: eight (20) after extra time.

Lyre were immediately on the back foot as Milford were to score two goals in the first minutes of the match, as well as Lyre also having to contend with playing into a stiff breeze. Another couple of scores from Milford really seemed to have the Lyre boys in a tizzy, but the boys persevered and their just rewards were to come with two goals from Oisín Twomey. Indeed Milford were to pick off a few more scores but with Lyre scoring another goal, and with some resolute defending by Cian O'Keeffe, Cathal Foley and Aaron O'Shea, along with some great stops from goalie Oisín O'Leary, they were only five points down at half time.

The coaching team of Michael Kiely, Michaél Murphy, Pat Finnegan and Hugh Twomey rearranged some player positions and despite Milford scoring again early Lyre were to fight on and really take the game to the Milford boys with further goals from Jack Finnegan and Jamie Murphy. Despite his young age special mention must be made of Evan Vicaire, who despite his 10 years of age, he was to play a vital roll of stymieing the threat posed by a particular Milford player and also offering an attacking threat from the half back line. Towards the end Lyre had their chances to win it but did not take them so extra time was needed to find a winner.

Once again Milford were the first to score with a goal, but this was to steel the Lyre boys resolve even more and Lyre fought on and slowly pegged the deficit back, and with goals from Jack Finnegan and Patrick O'Connor, along with a couple of long range points from Ronan Kiely, Lyre were to run out worthy winners at the end.

The squad: Oisín O'Leary (vice-captain), Cian O'Keeffe, Cathal Foley, Evan Vicaire, Aaron O'Shea, Ronan Kiely (vice-captain), Oisín Twomey, Cian Cashman, Jack Finnegan, Oran Lyons, Jamie Murphy, Brian Philpott, Ian Buckley, Muiris Reidy, Darrin Dugdale, Eoin Looney, Patrick O'Connor, Dylan Flynn, Kyle Singleton, Rory Sheehy.

While not every player was to see action on the day, each and every player was integral in getting the team to the final and every player on the squad should feel proud of their achievements.

Celebrating their victory, the under-12 squad made themselves heard on the journey back to Lyre Community centre where they celebrated together for a couple of hours. Juvenile club chairman James Kearney congratulated the team and challenged them to greater success, and Lyre Club chairman Fergus Murphy also congratulated the boys on their achievement.

The club would also like to thank Jersey sponsors Martin Cremin (Cutsue concrete polishing) and Ken O'Connell Electrical for the Jersey sponsorship and also Mark Flynn (Facecook) for past sponsorship and for providing the food on the nightAll-Ireland final referee

Congratulations to Banteer Lyre GAA member Con lane who has been appointed to take charge of the Kerry v Dublin all-Ireland replay on Saturday week.

Village renewal Autumn clean-up

We are arranging an Autumn clean-up of the village on the following dates. Friday 13th September @ 6pm. Saturday 14th September @ 11am. Sunday 15th September @ 11am. Please bring gloves and a Hi Vis as we want to ensure everyone's safety as a priority. Plastic bags will be supplied and we would welcome and encourage everyone to attend. Bring the kids along by all means as this project is as much educational as it is practical.

Kilbrin Graveyard

It has come to our attention that dogs litter is being left in the graveyard in Kilbrin and also someone is still leaving hedging in plastic bags. There is a team of dedicated people putting in huge work throughout the year to keep the graveyard clean and presentable. Cleaning up dog litter and other peoples hedge cuttings however, is something that they should not have to do.

We would plead with people to be considerate and clean up their own dog litter, or better again don't bring the dog at all. We would also ask whoever is dumping hedge cuttings to stop. This is a cherished place for many people in the community so please keep it in mind when visiting. We would like not to have to write this message again so we are asking that people are respectful of their fellow visitors and the place itself.

The community council can be contacted at if you have any queries. Also the PRO can be contacted directly at if you have anything of interest for this column. Whether you are at home or abroad we would be delighted to hear from you if you have anything that you would like to share with the community at large. Thanks to everyone that has contributed to date.
