Duhallow football final

Lyre junior footballers play Boherbue in the Duhallow football final on Sun next in Castlemagner at 7pm-please come out and support your team and get your flags up.

Lyre go in as complete underdogs as Boherbue have won this championship over the last 2 years. Lyre defeated Cullen in a disappointing Championship semi-final encounter to reach the Duhallow final. In a low scoring match where both sides failed to play to their full potential but most especially up front. Cullen being guilty of poor shooting near the goal, be it due to continuous pressure from the Lyre defence or just bad shot selection. The semi-final win sees Lyre return to a first Duhallow Final since 2015, of which Knocknagree won that season following a replay. Lyre won their first title in 2010 and regained that title in 2013.

Eddie Dunbar finishes in top 15

Eddie Dunbar believes a slipped chain in the final stages of Clásica Ciclista San Sebastián cost him a much higher finish. In the end the Irishman was 15th, finishing on his own just 18 seconds off the chasing group sprinting for 2nd place behind lone winner Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-QuickStep).Irishman Dunbar was just off the back of a group of about seven that formed over the top of the final climb with 9km to go. The Team Ineos rider then made it across to that group with a number of other chasers. However, rather than go on to the finish in that group to sprint for the placing's he went off the back of it after slipping his chain with 3km to go.It was a frustrating end of him, but again the first-year WorldTour rider has shown world class ability on the biggest stage against the best riders in the world."I was feeling good, the guys did a really good job today to make sure I was well hydrated and feeding well," Eddie Dunbar said.

Eddie Dunbar continued: "Castro (Jonathan Castroviejo) did a super job in the last 30km to ensure I was in the right place for the final climb. "My legs were good, I was able to follow and then over the top of the climb I was distanced a bit on the false flat. "So I held back a bit as I could see there were guys coming across. I could see Van Avermaet was coming across. "And obviously he is a quite good descender so I thought he would get us back to the others and then I would be all in for the sprint. "But with 3km to go my chain came off, which is unfortunate, but it's one of those things." I feel like I could have crept into the top 10, but it is what it is, it's a race that I like, it's my first time doing it and I hope to come back next year."

Kilbrin community centre

A new lighting and heating system will be installed in the community centre in the coming months. This project has been in the planning stage for quite some time and is badly needed. We hope that work will commence shortly and will keep you updated on progress.

Village Renewal

The community council have set up a dedicated group to oversee village renewal. In this regard we are looking for ideas for places that can be improved, please keep in mind that all the work here is voluntary so we will try to start small.

If you have any ideas please contact Deirdre Crowley or Pat O'Leary or indeed any member of the community council. We would also ask that people try to tidy their own areas and have the village looking its best for the summer months.

Ballygraddy School Cross

We have received a number of complaints about the junction at Ballygraddy School Cross. There is very little visibility when joining the Kanturk Liscarroll road from the Kilbrin side. To get a view of oncoming traffic drivers have to inch out towards the centre of the road putting themselves and the oncoming drivers in danger. This issue is more pronounced in the Summer months as there is full growth in the hedges. The community council will work with the county council to get this addressed as soon as possible as we would rather not be talking about it in the aftermath of an accident.

Lackeel graveyard

We are planning to hold a historical event in Lackeel cemetery later in the Summer and it will be a great opportunity to visit the site. We will give you more details in this column when they become available.

Contact details

The community council can be contacted if you have any queries. Also the PRO can be contacted directly at if you have anything of interest for this column. Whether you are at home or abroad we would be delighted to hear from you if you have anything that you would like to share with the community at large.

Steven and Joseph Sexton of Dromahane and Nadd passed away to their eternal reward recently. Coming from a well known bowling family, they were known far and wide. Besides being involved in championship and tournament scores, they were also great followers of the game. They had a great knowledge of bowling and were well versed in the modern and traditional aspects of the sport. They will be sadly missed by their families, neighbours and many friends. The bowling fraternity would like to extend their deepest sympathies. May they both rest in peace.
