Words of thanks

A big thank you to Cork County Council, Fermoy Municipal District Development Fund for a grant of €20,000 towards the building of the new hall and a special word of thanks goes to Ian Doyle for the herculean effort he made to ensure that the grant came to Ballyhea Parish to help this, our latest community project.

Church news

MONTH OF MAY - The month of May is dedicated to Our Blessed Lady. The Rosary will be recited at the grotto in the church Yard in Ballyhea every morning during the month of May at 9.40 a.m. on Weekdays and at 10.40 a.m. on Sundays.

CONFIRMATION - On Friday, May 17, a Combined Penitential Service and Ceremony of Light will take place in the church at 8 p.m. for the children preparing for Confirmation.

BLESSING OF HOMES - If you would like to have your home blessed, please leave your name and contact telephone number into the sacristy so that a suitable time may be arranged or contact 086 3016859.

PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES - The Cloyne Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes under the Patronage of Most Rev William Crean DD Bishop of Cloyne and Pilgrimage Director V parish priest Fr Tobias Bluitt will take place from May 31 to June 5. Men on the Move

Ballyhea Men on the Move continues every Monday and Thursday in the gym of the new complex at 7.30 p.m. in Ballyhea GAA Club. All ages (currently ranging from 30's to 60's) and all levels of fitness are catered for. Participants from outside the parish are also welcome. Please come along and try it out.


Clyda Rovers GAA

The Clyda Minor A Footballers had a great win in the Division 1 under-18 League final V Kanturk in Glantane last Thursday. Trailing five points to three at half time a thundering second half saw Clyda secure only their second ever Minor A league title.

The first half was an even affair, when Kanturk taking a 4-1 lead half way through the first half. Great defending by Ben Buckley steamed the tide and as midfielders Seán Kelly and David Walsh, Clyda came more into it. They reduced the lead down to a point coming into half time but Kanturk added on a point to lead 5-3 at half time.

The second half saw a transformed Clyda team. The defence held firm and only conceded one point in total in the second half. Led by a dominant midfield Clyda forwards excelled. Cathal Twohig well taken goal swinging the game to Clyda's favour early in the second half. Clyda saw out the game running out 2-10 to 0-06 winners in the end. Captain David Walsh accepted the cup after the game.

Both teams were missing a number of players and the championship looks to be a tight affair, and something the team and mentors are really looking forward to.

Juvenile GAA News

Clyda under-16s footballers played their Division 1 league semi-final against their nearest rivals Kilavullen on Sunday, May 12, a glorious sunny morning in Ballyhooley. David Cooney opened the scoreline with a great point in the first minute of play. Kilavullen were playing with the wind advantage in this half and replied within a few minutes with a goal and two points.

Following an outstanding save by Cian Dennehy - David Cooney tagged on four additional points to the score board. Clyda were playing very well at this stage with our half back line of Niall, Kevin and Darren very much on top. Further points followed by Cormac O'Reilly and Cian Walsh. Unfortunately, Kevin Graham got injured following a clash and had to go off just before half time. Half time score Clyda 0-7 Kilavullen 1-7.

After half time Kilavullen were playing much stronger than our lads. Ben, Cian, David and Niall all scored points and with 10 minutes to go we came within two points of them. It wasn't to be. Kilavullen broke the back line strong with three goals which made it very difficult to come back from. Final score Clyda 1-14 Kilavullen 4-11.

Golf classic

Clyda Rovers GAA Club will be holding its annual golf classic at Mallow Golf Club on Thursday and Friday, May 23, and 24. This is our 23nd year holding this event and it has become one of our main fund-raisers.

The entry fee for a team of three will be €160 with meal included. We are indebted to all those who have supported the classic down through the years and welcome any new people or businesses to come on board.

Mourneabbey Monument Meeting

A public meeting held by Mourneabbey Community Council and Mourneabbey Heritage Association will be held on Monday night, May 20, at 8.30 p.m. in the community centre. This meeting is to discuss plans to mark the centenary of the Mourneabbey Ambush which will take place in February 2021.

Western Duhallow

Bruach na Carraige camp

The annual summer camp at Bruach na Carraige in Rockchapel takes place from July 15 to July 26 inclusive. It will cater for children aged six to 15 years.

Those attending who have not previously played music will learn a few tunes on the whistle while those already started will be taught additional tunes plus singing and céilí dances. This will all be mixed in with fun and games with baking also included this year. Full details from 087 2205566.

Ladies football

Araglen Desmonds Bui Lady footballers recently recorded wins over Naomh Aban and Clonakilty in the league before going down to Inch Rovers after a hectic struggle.

The under-12 girls recently had wins over Banteer, Knocknagree and Mallow.

Scoil Laitiarian

Scoil Laitiarian one of the oldest summer Irish classes in Ireland this year will take place from July 1 to July 12.

Cullen Camp as it is known also includes music, sports and games.

All these are a wonderful way to learn Irish and it is this year confined to 10- to 15-year-olds. Full details form 086 3021502.


The annual Eucharistic Adoration pilgrimage to Knock Shrine takes place on Saturday, June 15. The programme begins at 11 a.m. with talks, testimonies, adoration and confession.

Holy Mass in the Basilica will take place at 3 p.m. with Most Rev Eamon Martins, Archbishop of Armagh as chief celebrant. The fee is €20 with the coach leaving at 7 a.m.

Kiskeam Tidy towns

Kiskeam Development Association wishes to advise all householders that the 2019 Tidy Towns competition is fast approaching and would request everyone to ensure that the village is kept clean and tidy in the months ahead.


The Rosary is recited at Kiskeam Grotto each night during the month of May at 8 p.m.
