Ballyhea: Church news - Mass times - Morning Mass will be celebrated at 10am till Saturday, January 11, There will be Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on Thursday after 10am. Mass till 11am.

Confessions will be heard before the Vigil Mass on Saturday evening.

MONTH OF JANUARY - The month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. Feast days for the coming week - Thursday the ninth: St Adrian, Abbot Friday the 10th: St Agatho. Saturday the 11th: St Alexander.

A WORD OF THANKS - Very many thanks to all for their Christmas offerings and for your support of the parish throughout the year.

Thanks also to the Altar servers, the Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, the Organist, choir, Folk Group, the Altar Society, Readers, Collectors and those who count the money, those who clean and maintain the church, the Catechist and the Sacristan.

2020 CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS - The 2020 County Championship draws were held at Pairc Ui Chaoimh recently. Premier SHC (top tier of 12): Group 1: Midleton, Sars, Douglas, Ballyhea; Group 2: Blackrock, Erins Own, Bishopstown, Newtownshandrum; Group 3: Glen Rovers, St Finbarr's, Na Piarsaigh, Carrigtwohill.

POC FADA - The annual Ballyhea GAA Poc Fada took place on St Stephen's Day. It was another great day with a wonderful turnout.

Winners of Adult Competition: Ryan Hanley, Luke Hanley and Kieran Morrissey with 39 shots, Runners-up: David Copps, Seán O'Kelly, Jamie Copps with 41 shots. Over 40 winners: Neil Ronan, Stephen Dennehy, Brian Fitzgibbon with 42 shots. The presentation took place in the Idle Hour Bar with Ava Mortell presenting the Dicko Mortell Memorial Shield to the winners. Seán Kenny of the Idle Bar presented the trophies to the other various winners.

Under-14 winners: Conor Horan, Conor Gilligan, Róisín Walsh with 35 shots. under-14 runners-up: Joseph Hickey, Tiernan Walsh, Danny Mac.

Namara with 40 shots. Juvenile Club chairman Tom Crowley presented the under-14 trophies in the club Pavilion. Thanks to everyone that took part or marked or helped out in any way. Thanks to Ger O'Shea, who looked after the registering of teams. Thanks to the Idle Hour for sponsoring the trophies.

PRESENTATION NIGHT - The club held its presentation night at the Corbett Court on Sunday, December 29, which was very well attended. The first presentation was to the recently married couples in the club. Bernadette and Martin Moloney, Ciarán and Sarah O'Regan, Timmy and Joanne Shanahan, Michael and Michaela Morrissey, Maurice and Jacklyn O'Sullivan, Trevor and Deirdre O'Sullivan, Owen and Ciara O'Sullivan, Edward and Michelle Rea.

Chair Michael Morrissey then made a presentation to Jamie Copps, who was part of the Cork under-20 hurling team which reached the all-Ireland Final in 2019 and to John Mortell, who was the Cork under-21 Selector in 2018 and under-20 Selector in 2019, both sides reaching the all-Ireland final. Club president Jerome O'Keeffe presented the North Cork Junior B Hurling Championship cup to the Junior Hurlers. The backroom team of Darran Ronan, Eamon Morrissey, Jonathan O'Sullivan, Michael O'Mahony, Noel O'Riordan and Audrey Morrissey were also acknowledged for their contributions.

The Ryan Memorial Club Hall of Fame Award was then presented to Neil Ronan Snr by Ellen Copps and Jerome O'Keeffe. Jerome gave a run down on Neil's playing career. Neil has given a lifetime of service to Ballyhea as a Player and Trainer. He won North Cork Junior Hurling medals in 1975 and 1976. County Junior in 1976 and County Intermediate in 1980. He had a tremendous year at Corner Back in the Centenary year of 1984 when Ballyhea reached the County Senior Final but lost out to a star-studded St Finbarr's outfit. Neil with Johnny Rea trained the under-14 hurlers to their first underage county title in 1967 and has coached in every grade in the club. In 2019 he was part of the management team which won the minor and under-16 Rebel Og North Cork Plate Competitions. Thanks to Helen O'Sullivan, Ger O'Shea and Mike Morrissey for organising the presentations.

Thanks to the club president Jerome O'Keeffe for making the presentations. Thanks to everyone who helped make the night a success. Best of luck to all the teams in the club in the year ahead and hopefully will be celebrating success in 2020.

JUVENILE PRESENTATION NIGHT - The Juvenile section recently held its presentation evening in the club Pavilion for under-sixes up to under-18. Rebel Og North Cork Medals were presented to the under-12 league winners, under-14, under-16 and under-18 plate winners and 2018 Minor League winners. Club president Jerome O'Keeffe presented all the players with their medals in front of a large attendance. Thanks to everyone that helped out on the night.

BALLYHEA GAA DOES STRICTLY - Ballyhea GAA Club will be swopping the hurling pitch for the dance floor on March 14 Plans are currently been drawn up for the event under the guidance of Noel O'Riordan. Anyone interested in dancing or helping out in any way should contact Noel. The lineout is nearly finalised so if you are interested in dancing contact Noel as soon as possible.

Men on the Move

Ballyhea Men on the Move is back and will be held at 7.30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays in the Gym in the new complex in Ballyhea GAA Club. All ages (currently ranging from 30's to 60's) and all levels of fitness catered for, and participants from outside Ballyhea are very welcome. Please come and along and try it out. Cill na Martra

Aisling an tSeanduine

Aisling an tSeanduine is the title of a Scoraíocht like show being staged by Craobh Lachtain Naofa of Comhaltas in the Ionad Cultúrtha, Baile Bhúirne on Friday, January 17, at 8 p.m. It is an opportunity for locals to see this winning show with a cast of 40 plus before they head to Caiseal to compete in the all-Ireland Comhaltas Finals at the end of the month.

As the show features the best of Múscraí's music, song, dance and storytelling performed by both old and young, it is no surprise that they are county and Munster champions. As seating is limited at the Ionad, it is advised to book a seat by ringing 45733.

Annual Ball Run

Lovely sunshine favoured the St Stephen's Day annual Ball Run down Cathair Daithi, hosted by the Cumann Peile.

The big crowd shouted at and coaxed their ball but the winners of the cash prizes were Sarah Jane Uí Chonaill, Na Cula, Greg Mag Uidhir, Cathair Céirín, Cáit and Christy Ring, Carraig an Ime. Míle comhghairdeas.

Monthly music session

The first Monthly Music Session of 2020 at Murray's, Macroom will be on this Tuesday, January 14, As always, it will be hosted by Acadh Aidhneach and Craobh Lachtaín Naofa branches of Comhaltas and all are most welcome.

Dare to go bare

Many congratulations to Connie Cronin, Cloch Aidhneach along with her old neighbours in Inse Gheimleach, who had a head shave, beard shave and waxing in Creedons at the end of December in aid of Cork Penny Dinners. Donations have already passed €2,000 but the go-fund page is still open for late donations.

Defibrillator at Mons

Fundraising is ongoing to secure a Defibrillator at Mons. A substantial amount has already been collected but as always, the final furlong is the hardest. A final appeal is being made for a few more donations and hopefully, we will see this welcome piece of equipment on display shortly.

VICTORY SOCIAL - A night to mark the winning of the North Cork Junior A hurling championship and the Minor Division 1 North Cork Football double in 2019 will take place on Saturday, January 11, in the Hibernian Hotel. Tickets are €20 and available from any committee member. There will be a buffet and live music.

2019 COUNTY FINAL DATE FIXED - The date for the 2019 Minor final versus Newcestown has been fixed for Sunday, January 19. We will confirm the venue and time next week.

PUC FADA - Thanks to all who supported the Puc Fada on St Stephen's days. We had a great crowd and will be making presentations to two great charities - Crumlin Hospotal and Liam's Lifts in the coming weeks.
