Review 2012


GOLDEN THOMAS Thomas Fogarty from Canon Sheehan Place won gold in Brighton in the World Taekwondo Martial Arts Championships. Thomas Ring from Sandfield won bronze.

CHARITY SWIM A 236km swim took place at Mallow Swimming Pool in October in aid of Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin Dublin. The swim equalled the distance from Mallow to the hospital and it was completed by teams of swimmers after several hours.

GRADUATION Popular Mallow stage actor and singer Colin O'Brien from Ballyellis graduated at UCC with a BSc in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. He is now based in London.

MSRU BENEFIT. Mary Ketch, who led a group of Mallow ladies in the Evening Echo Mini Marathon, raised €5,570 for the Mallow Search and Rescue Unit.

BOOTHS OPEN Mallow town centre was full of activity as local curious lady customers gathered for the opening of Booth's Pharmacy on Main Street in October.

SEAFARING BARRY Mallow born drama student and director Barry Whelan had huge support from town for the play The Seafarer which he directed and staged at the Granary Theatre in Cork in mid November.

UCC SUCCESS Sinead Cremin, Rockmount House, Mallow graduated with an Hons Degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons) at UCC. in November. Sinead is daughter of Marian and Ned Cremin

JOURNALISM Diarmuid Sheehan from Mallow graduated with an honours Masters in Journalism in November at C.I.T. He is currently working freelance for the Corkman, Examiner and Evening Echo.

HALL OF FAME It was announced in December that Community Games stalwart Mike Bourke from Avondale Park was the Hall of Fame recipient for the 2013 Sport and Leisure Awards. The Community Award winner is Mallow Rotary Club.




A new book, entitled Mallow in the Millennium, was published by photographer and writer Stephen Murphy.The book features several photographs, with Bunton Sheehan, who sadly left us in 2012, gracing the front page. Minister Sean Sherlock launched photographer John Hooten's photographic book at Springfort Hall in December.

MALLOW GAA AGM Kieran Murphy becomes the newly elected chairman of Mallow GAA at their AGM in December. Outgoing Chairman Bartley Galvin, who held the position for three years, was applauded for his work at the helm of the club.
