Mount Hilary club hosts its first mountain race

John Tarrant

Newly formed athletics club Mount Hilary hosted a leg of the Munster Mountain Hill Running series at Mount Hilary near Banteer.

The debutant staging made for compelling viewing in a terrific battle for supremacy, and there was no separating joint winners James McIntyre and Barry Murray at the finishing line. There was a great race also in the ladies' equivalent, with Banteer native Niamh Hartnett (North Cork AC) emerging best. Her knowledge of home terrain earned her a prominent position from an early stage.

The hosts, Mount Hilary Club, expressed delight at the 100 participants who convened to support the club's inaugural race, taking place at a fitting location at Mt. Hilary. Organisers extended sincere appreciation to Niamh Hartnett, Sean Harte and the Munster Mountain Running Association (MMRA) for the opportunity to co-host this year's event.  Thanks were also extended to the Glen Theatre for providing the venue for parking, registration and post-race refreshments in addition to the club members who volunteered their time both in the lead up to the race and on race night.
