Majella Cullagh, Mary Hegarty and Cara O'Sullivan, Cork's three internationally-renowned sopranos, have been named Cork Persons of the Month to mark their glittering careers to date.

"These wonderful singers are now Cork icons, and their beautiful voices are revered by people all over the world", said the awards judges.

"There are great physical and artistic demands to being an international soprano today, and Cara, Majella and Mary have worked extremely hard, over many years, to achieve their successes."

The three sopranos were nominated by Dr Geoffrey Spratt, director of the CIT Cork School of Music, who retires this year as chairman of the Cork Orchestral Society and also by Margaret Baker and Maeve Fleischmann.

"These great singers have been cultural ambassadors for Cork, not just the length and breadth of Ireland, but throughout the world," said Dr. Spratt, Cork School of Music.

" They have conquered opera stages and concert platforms in many countries, demonstrating a level of excellence that does us all proud.

"They also promote Cork during their individual concerts and performances, and have attracted many visitors to their home city."

Their names now go forward for possible selection as Cork Persons of the Year, at a Gala Awards Lunch on 17 January 2014, at Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork.
