The sky's the limit for young Mallow band
A MERE six-months after being formed a Mallow band has been handed the chance to support two of Ireland's best known acts in their own backyard.
Having already supported the mighty Aslan for their recent gig at the Lodge, Palm Juice will take to the stage ahead of The 4 of Us at the same venue next Saturday night.
Palm Juice is comprised of teenagers Denis Burke (drums), Kieran McCarthy (guitar) and, Stuart Dineen (bass),who are pupils at Davis College in Mallow and Travis Butler (guitar) and Mark Sheehan (vocals) who are second year music students at UCC.
Speaking to The Corkman, Denis said that getting the Aslan gig was down to a combination of good fortune and the persistence of their manager, well known local musician Johnny 'Bongos' Horgan.
"After the band we had been in split up last summer Kieran and I decided to form a new one and persuaded the other lads to join. We started practising at the youth centre, where Johnny works, and he took us under his wing as he liked our sound," said Denis.
Johnny then contacted Aslan after hearing they were coming to Mallow to ask if he could get them a support slot. "They already had a support act, but, as luck would have it the support act pulled out at the last minute," he added.
Their eclectic mix of covers, including songs by Bruno Mars, Led Zeppelin and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, impressed Aslan's front man Christy Dignam and venue owner Billy O'Flynn. "The gig was amazing and Christy was brilliant. He even called us up to the stage to sing with Aslan and we had a great chat with him after the gig," said Denis.
"Then Billy approached us and asked if we wanted to support The 4 of Us. Needless to say, we were not going to turn that chance down," he laughed.
Denis is under no illusion about how tough it is to get a break in the music industry, but said he believed that supporting two such well-known acts would help build a solid platform for Palm Juice to build on.
"One thing we do not want is to become just another cover band, so we are busy writing our own material that we can begin to build into our set as we get more experience," he said.
"We have a great manager in Johnny and there is an incredible self belief within the band that we can make a career in the music industry. As far as we are concerned the sky is the limit," said Denis.
