Snap happy in Mallow

Bill Browne

After what has been another busy and productive year for Mallow Camera Club, members took the opportunity to let their hair down at the recent Christmas dinner and awards night at the Springfort Hall Hotel.

But, before they could totally relax, there was the small matter of announcing the winners of the prestigious 'Image of the Year' competition, with distinguished photographers Ann Frances and Inãki Hernández-Lasa handed the difficult task of selecting the category, grade and overall winners.

Club PRO Neil O'Mullane said that, as had been anticipated, the standard was extremely high, which reflected the "fantastic depth of talent within the club".

"Ann and Inãki put a huge amount of time and effort into the process and did a fantastic job for us," said Neil. They each provided precise, clear and definitive commentary, including suggestions for improvement where appropriate, which was highly appreciated by all the contestants."

The competition was divided into three categories; colour print, mono print and project image, with members judged over four grades (grade one being for less-experienced members, to grade four for advanced), with the top three images in each receiving awards.  There was also an overall prize within each category.

Speaking on the night, Inãki Hernández-Lasa said both judges had enjoyed the experience of reviewing the entries.

"The standard was extremely high across the three categories, with a wide variety of subject matters from seascapes to portraiture, street photography, wildlife and architecture," he said.

"The quality of the printed work was excellent, with the correct media type being chosen and superb presentation of the work.

"My sincere appreciation to Mallow Camera Club, one of the top clubs in the country, where everyone contributes positively to its running by setting up equipment, organising and displaying the prints, tracking the scores and, perhaps most importantly, making sure that everybody feels welcome," he added.

Neil also thanked all of the members for their efforts during the year to help run and administer the club's various events and competitions, culminating in the dinner and awards night.

All of the winning images can be viewed at www.mallowcamerclub.ie or on the club's Facebook page.
