Newmarket's Helen proves a capable author

Described as a thrilling young adult novel, 'The Queen of Coin and Whispers' which was published on June 1, has gotten off to a superb start, garnering positive reviews from numerous critics across the literary world.

This is the debut work from Newmarket Author Helen Corcoran, who now lives in Dublin.

After graduating from Trinity College, Helen worked as a bookseller for over a decade while simultaneously honing her craft as a writer.

"I was interested in being a writer since I was around eight, and started writing my own stories when I was eleven. I was lucky that I had English teachers in secondary school who encouraged me in both reading and writing. It helped keep me writing when I went to college, especially on completing novels even if they were practice ones" Helen told The Corkman.

"I've read fantasy since I was kid, and it was a genre I fell in love with immediately, the possibilities are endless," she said. "For this book, I wanted to write about a princess who was ready to inherit the throne, who's been preparing as best she could, and was aware of the political and economic situations she faced" Helen explained.

She adds that she is also fascinated by historical spymasters, and the kind of personalities that suit the role of information gathering.

The Queen of Coin and Whispers weaves the intriguing tale of teenage queen Lia who inherits her corrupt uncle's bankrupt kingdom.

Lia proceeds to bring a new spymaster into the fold, Xania, who takes the job to avenge her murdered father.

Faced with dangerous plots and hidden enemies, can Lia and Xania learn to rely on each other, as they discover that all is not fair in love and treason?

The throne symbolises both power and duty and they must decide what to sacrifice for their country - and for each other.

Helen is currently working on other books but hopes to write a sequel to this, her debut work.

"I plan to have some of the original characters return as adults," she said. "It depends if The Queen of Coin and Whispers does well, and readers show interest in another book from that world" she added.

The Queen of Coin and Whispers can be purchased in all good bookshops and is also available as an eBook.
