Bealtaine off to bright start with 'Shine Your Light' concert

Sheila Fitzgerald

There was a melodic start to the Bealtaine Festival last Saturday night when the Lorraine O'Riordan Gospel Choir raised the roof of the packed Edel Quinn Hall in Kanturk during their uplifting 'Shine Your Light' concert.

Foot tapping favourites such as This Little Light of Mine, Ain't no Mountain High Enough, Put Your Hand in the Hand and Love Shine A Light proved to be firm favourites, everyone in the audience was swept away by the music - clapping and singing along. The star of the show was Anna O'Riordan Quirke, who received a standing ovation from the audience for her performance of This is the Light.

In 2011, a group of the late Lorraine's family and friends sang gospel music at her first anniversary mass, and with the support of Fr. Pat Linehan, the Gospel Choir was formally set up in her memory. Since then the Choir has grown from strength to strength and now boasts 27 members. The choir is directed by Lorraine's sister, Christine O'Riordan, with her Dad Jerry on Guitar, Louise Curtin on Keyboards and Cian Daly on Drums.

MC Noel Carroll thanked all who supported the Concert which was in aid of two very worthy charities - Cork Mental Health and Kanturk Hospital. Cork Mental Health is a voluntary organisation, which actively supports and empowers persons with a mental illness through the promotion and provision of high quality housing services.

Cork Mental Health Foundation is also a voluntary organisation whose aims are to promote positive mental health, to support people with mental illnesses and to create awareness and understanding of mental illness. The organisation has a 14 bed house and four cottages in Cois Alla in Kanturk.

Kanturk Community Hospital was established in 1927, and accommodates 48 residents. Services provided include respite, convalescence, palliative care and continuing care for low to maximum dependency adult residents. Other services include psychiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, audiology, dental, dietician and speech and language therapy.

The Lorraine O'Riordan Gospel Choir welcomes those who would like to join - just message their Facebook Page for details.
