Viaduct walkway takes another step
The walkway along the viaduct outside Fermoy.
Cork county councillors paved the way for the development of the Carrigabrick Viaduct in Fermoy into a dedicated walkway.
The final piece of the jigsaw fell into place at County Hall after councillors agreed to hand over the structure to the Avondhu Blackwater Partnership for a nominal sum.
Last April council planners gave the green light the partnerships ambitious plan to breathe new life into the structure, by converting it into a pedestrian walkway and viewing platform.
Cork county councillor and partnership board member Frank O'Flynn said he hoped work would now begin on the project within the coming weeks.
He said the conversion will cost in the region of €100,000, with the money ring fenced through Blackwater leader funding.
Once opened, the walkway will become a spur for the Avondhu Way, which is part of the pan-European E8 Long Distance Path that stretches from Romania to Cork.
