Fitzsimons the hero as United go five clear

JASON FITZSIMONS was the hero of the hour for Newtown United on Sunday as he fired his side five points clear at the pinnacle of the Premier Division table.

The midfielder struck for the only goal of the game as the Magpies eased past BBK United at Brittas Park.

Sunday's victory was Newtown's fifth success from their last six outings and the Matt Kelly Memorial Park side haven't tasted defeat since a 1-5 drubbing suffered at the hands of Arklow Town in September last.

With the Oscar Traynor team set to kick off their campaign on Saturday, most of the top flight stars were tied up and therefore only one other clash went ahead.

That was the meeting of Shillelagh United and Arklow Celtic in Ballard and that encounter saw the Arklow side register their first point of the season thanks to a 2-2 draw.

Paddy Byrne and Seamus Osborne were the duo who were on target for United but efforts from Mark Wolohan and Cliff Whelan earned the Celtic Park outfit a deserved-share of the spoils and finally-brought their six match losing streak to a thankful halt.
