Ger overcomes hip operation to tackle gruelling Ice Swim
Former Greystones resident Ger Kennedy set out to fulfil a dream recently – to complete the gruelling world Ice mile swim, just months after a hip replacement.
Lough Dan in Wicklow was the chosen location and on the morning of the swim the water was at a low of 3.3 degrees Celsius. much lower than the required 5 degrees set out by the International Ice Swim Association (IISA) based in South Africa.
Ger's dream came true and he achieved the extreme and gruelling mile swim in just over 40 minutes without a wetsuit.
Amazingly he has became the first person in Leinster and the 64th in the world to successfully complete this new extreme event.
The Ice Swim is a recognised world wide swim to 'The International Ice Swimming Association' (IISA) who are the organisation officiating Ice Swims around the world.
Ger is a member of the Long Distance Swimming Association of Ireland and their support and encouragement was vital to his success.
Because of the severity of the swim Ger had to also organise a full support team of over 10 people. Ger's next project will be the 'GreatBray to Greystones Invitational Swim' in September 2013.
