Hollywood hold aces

Hollywood 0-12 Newtown 0-06

Pat Dunne at Hollywood

Hollywood made it three on the bounce in the Arklow Bay Hotel Senior Football League Division 1A with a hard-earned win over Newtown in a very lively encounter on Friday night last.

Tony Hannon pointed a free in the first minute to get the home side up and running.

Both sides traded a couple of wides before Mark Fitzsimons pointed a free to get the visitors up and running in the fifth minute.

Newtown, who were making better use of their possession overall, closed out the opening quarter with Declan Doyle adding a fine point after good build up work by Paul O'Riordan to double the lead.

Mark Fitzsimons somehow dropped a close in free short into the small square and a rushed clearance by the home side fell back to Fitzsimons who made no mistake the second time round with a point.

Niall Clarke had a shot for a point in the next attack and his effort crashed back out off the post and was cleared.

Rory McCarthy came on as a forced sub for Newtown due to an injury.

The home side turned over possession a number of times playing 50-50 high balls into Tony Hannon.

Hollywood slowly got more into the game as things settled down with Harry Wilson clearing a lot of ball and they started to run at the Newtown defence, which was proving to be more fruitful. Stephen Kearney hit the upright again as the home side moved up a gear.

A great interception and a peach of a pass by Paul Kelly found the ever-alert Kearney who pointed for the home side.

Peadar Traynor won the resultant kick-out and found Tony Hannon with a great pass and Hannon laid the ball off to PJ O'Keefe who pointed to level matters, three points apiece with 18 minutes on the clock.

Newtown cursed their luck again as they lost another player through injury, and Micheal Doyle came on as a replacement.

Wing-back Keith Traynor made a burst up the pitch and hit a piledriver from 35 metres out, somehow Brian Kennedy brilliantly got down to deny the home side an opening goal.

Newtown hit two bad wides to try and stem the flow.

Centre-forward Ciaran Tyrell pointed to give the home side the lead in the 21st minute.

Tony Hannon pointed a free and moments later was unfortunate not to goal, as his lob over the onrushing goalie just took the paint of the top of the crossbar and went over for a point.

Stephen Kearney sensationally landed a monster of a point from 66 metres out with a sweet left boot, for the score off the night to leave the half-time score 0-07 to 0-03 in favour of the home side.

Mark Fitzsimons pointed in the 33rd minute after great build up play by Sean Heffernan for the east coast side.

Tony Hannon pointed another free for the home side as the battle intensified.

Tony added another point after Rob Kelly broke down a Newtown attack.

Paul O'Riordan sent in a high ball into the danger zone where sub Ciaran McGirll had his fisted effort well saved by Hollywood goalie Colin Tutty. The battle intensified a little too much for the Baltinglass official's liking and he had to dish out a couple of yellow cards to each team.

Mark Fitzsimon's pointed a free to leave four in with 50 minutes played.

Thomas Burke pointed after Joe Glennon picked him out with a sublime pass from a free in midfield.

Newtown battled away but could not get the goal that they required at this late stage.

Niall Clarke closed out the scoring for the home side with a mighty point.

John Murphy's Newtown side will have to regroup for their next fixture at home to Kiltegan.

Mick Murray's Hollywood side will be delighted, sitting top of this division, unbeaten in three, and will be in for another battle royale away to Coolkenno in the next round.
