Defeat might have been the end result but Co. Wicklow pair Louise Quinn and Claire Walsh donned their Irish jerseys with pride and determination when they faced the recently crowned world champions, USA, in Pasadena last weekend.

The USA's 'Victory Tour' got off to a winning start when Christen Press picked out Tobin Heath, whose header found the back of the net in the 16th minute.

Lindsey Horan doubled the advantage 15 minutes later and Carli Lloyd scored through a header from distance before the break to put the game out of Ireland's reach.

The most pleasing aspect for Ireland was their second-half display when they really put it up to the World Cup winners with Walsh coming on for her Garden County colleague..

'It's 3-0 and no one likes to lose, but I think you have to put it in context. We're playing against the world champions in their home match, on their victory tour. Overall, I'm very, very pleased with the performance and the way the girls played tonight,' said Ireland interim manager Tom O'Connor.

Republic of Ireland: Marie Hourihan, Claire O'Riordan, Louise Quinn (Claire Walsh), Diane Caldwell, Jess Gargan, Harriet Scott, Niamh Fahey, Niamh Farrelly, Amber Barrett (Rianna Jarrett), Heather Payne (Eabha O'Mahony), Katie McCabe.
