Tragic discovery at Kilcoole beach

A man in his 60s was found deceased on the beach between Kilcoole and Newcastle on Monday evening.

The alarm was raised at around 6.30 p.m. when a kit bag was found on the beach containing personal belongings such as a phone and car keys.

Members of Greystones Coast Guard assisted gardaí with the search operation.

Gardaí found the vehicle in the Kilcoole car park.

Unfortunately the search resulted in the discovery of the man along the shore. Rescue personnel battled to save his life by administering CPR but to no avail.

The Coast Guard Rescue 116 helicopter landed on the beach and placed the casualty in the aircraft. They flew to the airfield at Newcastle aerodrome where the man was pronounced dead and transferred to a HSE ambulance and brought to Loughlinstown Hospital.

The deceased is not believed to live locally. An investigation is under way in the tragedy.
