Petition calling for post office to be reopened

A petition has been set up urging An Post to re-open Ballywaltrim Post Office as soon as possible.

An Post has said that there are no plans to permanently leave Ballywaltrim without a post office. The contract has been re-advertised with a new closing date of the end of May, after plans to re-locate to the Boghall Road collapsed.

The Kilbride office closed in March, after Ann passed away. Even though she had previously announced her retirement, the devoted public servant had agreed to remain in-situ until a new premises was up and running but sadly ill health intervened.

The tender process for Centra on the Boghall Road had run in to difficulties, so the process had to begin again.

'The Ballywaltrim Post Office was one of the busiest in the North Wicklow area and the credit for that goes to the late Ann McCarthy,' said Cllr Joe Behan, who has started the petition. 'Anne was an extremely popular and diligent Postmaster and she and her wonderful staff provided an excellent service for many years.

'When Anne sadly passed away, the contract for the Ballywaltrim Post Office was advertised and we all expected a new post office to be open by now.

'I am concerned that the longer the delay in reopening the post office, the greater the chance that it will remain closed permanently.

'I am organising a campaign to save our post office by indicating to An Post the massive support there is in the area for re-opening it,' said Cllr Behan. 'I hope to get the support of all the people who have relied on the post office in the past and those who will use it in the future.

'I have petition sheets available to sign and I ask that people contact me to get some sheets to be filled in by family, friends and neighbours. This will show An Post that we want to have our post office reopened as soon as possible.'
