Arklow athlete Mary Nolan Hickey is gearing up for her 40th Dublin City Marathon and is encouraging others to sign up too.

Mary teamed up with the KBC Dublin Marathon to announce that 2,500 extra entries will go on sale on Monday, July 1. This follows a sell-out of the 20,000 entries back in December, 10 months before the marathon on Sunday, October 27.

The entry has been increased from 20,000 to a record 22,500 following an agreement with key authorities.

The 2019 Dublin Marathon organisers invited the 13 runners who completed the first ever Dublin Marathon in 1980 and all 39 marathons since to help them announce the news of the expanded entry.

Mary Nolan Hickey has the distinction of being the sole female among that group.

'I'm doing my 40th this year because I feel blessed to have done every Dublin Marathon so far. It's a cliché that it is the 'friendly marathon' but it truly is! Whether the weather is good or bad, the crowds still come out. It's incredible that someone who has done it 39 years in-a-row can still be amazed by it, but I am. The crowds, the atmosphere out on the course, the fun going around. That still lifts me,' Mary said.

In addition to the 2,500 extra entries, additional places are also expected to be made available due to a refund window for current entrants which will open at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 3, and close at midnight on Sunday, June 16. The refund will be available on 'Manage My Bookings' available via entrant's confirmation link.

Entries are now also open for the 2019 KBC Race Series. This includes the South Dublin 10k on Sunday, July 21; the Frank Duffy 10 Mile on Saturday, August 24; and the KBC Dublin Half Marathon on Saturday, September 21, both in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

Wicklow athletes are invited to log onto kbcdublinmarathon.ie to available of bundle offers for the 2019 KBC Race Series.
