BRAY MAN JOHN JOYCE has been named as the new Leinster Chess Champion.

Joyce, who is captain of the Bray-Greystones Chess Club, saw off 11 elite competitors to lift the title at the Teachers Club in Parnell Square recently.

Joyce has had a remarkable career starting out in the Presentation College, Bray. During this time, he went on to become Irish Under 19 Champion.

Further success was to come, as he was an integral part of BrayGreystones successful All-Ireland Club Championships run in 1999, 2000, & 2010. In 2004, Joyce was just one win away from the Irish Senior title.

However, in 2004, he defeated former British Champion, Grandmaster John Nunn, at the Bunratty Masters. John is a brother of cricket star Ed Joyce. Cllr. Stephen Stokes (youth officer of BGCC) paid tribute to John Joyce as a player and team leader. Cllr. Stokes added that John is an excellent role model for young chess players coming up the ranks.
