The family and friends of James Byrne gathered at St Patrick's Church in Curtlestown recently, to see him presented with a Papal Benemerenti medal for his services to the Catholic Church.

James was presented with the award by Fr John Wall, his nephew Fr Richard Byrne, and Fr Bernard Kennedy, in recognition of his finer work within the parish.

The medal is awarded by Pope Francis to members of the clergy and laity who make a significant contribution to the church.

Mr Byrne has served in many capacities for the parish, over many years, with chairperson of the voluntary Parish Cemeteries Committee among his many mantles.

It was a joyous occasion and James was delighted to have the honour bestowed upon him
