Gardai recover stolen guns
GARDAI HAVE recovered two guns after 29 weapons were stolen from a gun shop in Ashford.
The raid took place on Saturday, September 8, but details of the theft were only released on Monday as Gardaí went about matching up the guns with their serial numbers.
29 firearms and ammunition were taken from the Wicklow County Sports Gun Shop at Coolawinna Industrial Estate, just outside Ashford, after thieves cut their way in through the roof at around 12.45 a.m.. While inside the premises they also cut through doors protecting the strong-room storing the weapons.
It is thought the raid involved at least five people. The items stolen include shotguns, 22-calibre rifles and over a dozen boxes of ammunition.
Gardaí believe the weapons were stolen by criminal gangs, either from Dublin or Wexford.
Two of the guns were recovered over the weekend after a stolen car was stopped in Ballyfermot. The car sped through traffic lights and was pursued by the Gardaí before being brought to a halt. Two men were arrested and Gardai found two guns in the vehicle after a search. Both men denied any knowledge of the weapons.
Wicklow Gardaí are continuing to investigate the Coolawinna robbery. Technical Bureau experts carried out a thorough check of the premises. It is believed that the gang responsible for the theft will try and sell on most of the weapons.
Gardaí in Wicklow town have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at (0404) 60140.
