The Newcastle Village community came out in force for a fun run with a difference last weekend. Not content with running their hearts out and enjoying the array of entertainment on offer, the children and adults gathered in a field at Leamore Lane chose to douse one another in specially prepared, and perfectly safe, holi powder.

The result was a carnival of colour and a day thoroughly enjoyed by all. 'It went fantastically, we were delighted with it, the paint definitely added an extra element,' said one of the event organisers Tina Donohue. 'We wanted to do something which was for all the family, not just for parents and not just for kids.'

Held to raise funds for two separate organisations, Newcastle Parish and Newcastle Community Centre, the colour fun run is one of many fundraisers organised on a yearly basis by members of the community. And Tina revealed that, with money still coming in, they had raised over €3,500 thus far.

'We want it to be annual event, we're always looking at ways to raise funds. Our next big fundraiser will probably be in September of this year,' she said as she expressed her thanks to all those who had made the event happen.
