Musician and teacher Stuart Crampton received something of a shock last week, when his family and friends surprised him with a party.

Stuart was hanging up his teaching boots, after 23 years of guitar and piano tuition in Greystones, nine of those in Greystones Studios.

His family organised the whole event, recruiting Paul Byrne of the Greystones Guide to lure him into the party at Theatre Lane Lofts after interviewing him about his teaching career.

Nikki Byrne of Whale Theatre said that Stuart is hugely popular and a highly respected teacher in Greystones.

Students popped into him throughout the week with thank-you cards and hand-shakes to mark the end of an era.

Stuart gave a speech at the party, thanking everyone for their contribution not just to the evening, but to his life.

After a brief courtship with insurance sales, Stuart went into teaching and after an initial delivery of flyers, never advertised his services after that - word of mouth serving its purpose in the locality.

'It's been a very emotional week,' Stuart told his guests last Thursday evening. He gave sincere thanks to everyone, none more than his children Rebecca, Elliot, Claudia and Dylan.

There was much warmth in the room for the occasion, and Stuart couldn't believe his eyes when he saw such a lard crowd gathered for the celebration.

They were all hiding patiently, and very quietly, in the space adjacent to Stuart's studio, to give him the fright of a lifetime.
