Schools participate in workshop to raise awareness of littering
Two north Wicklow schools took part in a nationwide school's campaign to raise awareness of littering last week.
Students from St Kilian's Community School and Presentation College Bray participated in the 'Bin It!' workshop that has been travelling to schools around the country this year.
The workshop is being run as part of the Gum Litter Taskforce's education campaign, which also included outdoor posters and TV and online advertising.
Geared towards first and second year students, the workshop is actor-led and explores littering and social responsibility.
Chairman of the Gum Litter Taskforce Paul Kelly said that the workshops give the taskforce the chance to get in front of young people and influence a whole generation on responsibly disposing of its litter.
'This element of the campaign is of huge importance and always receives very positive feedback from those who participate.
'Our goal is to bring about a behaviour change in the younger generation that will impact on the way future generations dispose of litter and the schools education programme is an excellent tool to allow us do this,' Mr Kelly said.
The workshop tour is supported by a website www.chewitbinit.com which includes games and quizzes for students, lesson plans, teachers' notes, posters and activity cards to help integrate the theme of responsible litter disposal into the curriculum.
