Bowed but unbroken, the doors of Everest Cycles have re-opened a week after a devastating fire burnt the premises to the ground.

On Monday Tommy Hanratty and Ken Hind re-opened their business in a temporary location behind Lidl at Industrial Yarns.

Tommy said they have been humbled by people's kindness in the aftermath of the fire, which gutted seven businesses, and said their primary aim at the moment is to honour existing orders.

'We had bikes there belonging to customers so we're anxious to meet our commitments to customers. Everyone has been absolutely amazing and we have been totally overwhelmed by people's generosity and kindness. This week we will start to rise from the ashes.'

Tommy shrugged off his heroism last week when he rescued flatmate Hanno Garms from an upstairs apartment, saying: 'I didn't give it a second thought. I really don't think I'm a hero and I'm not taking to the hero tag at all. I just did what anyone would do. There was no heroism, none whatsoever. It was just something you do.'
